Incoherent ramblings from a redneck tech geek

Uh Oh, Now you guys are in trouble!

I finally put Vista on my Primary PC. I have been in the Beta forever, but I am just now putting my workhorse to work for me. So far, no troubles with anything I need, INCLUDING THE ZUNE SOFTWARE.

The reason I took the plunge is two fold. First off, I returned from Vegas with some nasty performance issues and I got a Vista Keyboard Mouse set, The Microsoft Desktop 6000 2.0. This set has widget buttons and other goodies for Vista. Anyhow, rather than spend the time repairing the problems with my XP install, why not go forward.

I am running a Pentium4 Dell running at 3.4ghz with 2gig of RAM and Vista is running smooth as can be. I have zero complaints so far. I know there are many screen shots out there already, but now you get (or have to) see mine!

This is the Welcome Center. You can find out what is new, set up widgets, and more…

This switcher is one of the slickest graphical additions in Vista so far. Keep in mind I have only been running it for 20 hours so far.

Check out more Screenies after the jump!

This is the Control Panel

Yeah!!! Zune Software!!! Remember, it was not supported right when the Zune was released. Some folks whined, but really… Vista is not even out yet, how many people have Zunes and Vista already?

I will be messing with this some today, it’s a DVD Creation Application.

And wait until you see Office 2007, Awesome. The GUI is totally changed. Here is an email being generated in Outlook 2007.

I have been running 32 bit Vista Ultimate on my test platform which is a 3ghz P4 with 2GB Ram and an Intel chipset for a few months now. To my surprise all my development software products have worked just fine. The only exception was Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 and that was a small feature incompatibility. Not a big deal.

But the big downside to running Vista was that there were NO non-beta virus software packages available. So I was reluctant to convert my development workstation to Vista.

I recently contacted Symantec via email and explained my situation regarding anti-virus software. I promply received an email in return inviting me to participate in the pre-release testing of Norton Internet Security 2007 for Vista. They were actively seeking testers at that time. I am now an "Official" Symantec tester.

So now I have an anti-virus package. I figure it's time to upgrade my develpoment platform which is an AMD 64 bit processor with 2gb of ram and the nVidia nForce3 chipset.

I installed the 64 bit version of Vista Ultimate that i downloaded from Microsoft using my MSDN subscription. It took forever for the install to complete. But, it did complete and successfully. Everything seems to work fine.

The only outstanding issue I have with Vista is with chipset drivers. Neither nVisia or Intel have "release" chipset drivers so i am stuck using the generic Vista drivers.

I'll have to admit that I am very pleased with Vista, so far.

It looks a lot more like OS X with the widgets and everything. And the outlook mail looks very similar to OS X's mail program. They must be moving more in that direction.
