2007 Bloggies… What the…

Ok, I made a little rant a while back about the Bloggies where I basicly said, nominate who you want. I could have asked you to nominate one of my “blogs”, but I am well aware that smaller blogs like mine aren’t what the Bloggies are looking for. See the post here.

I got a note yesterday pointing me to the finalists and I went expecting to see the usual suspects. I was dead wrong. Well for the most part, they were all there. What shocked me was not that, it was who wasn’t there.

I enjoy Engadget and Gizmodo and they are both worthy of winning a bloggie in their given category, but what if Engadget wasn’t even in the running? That would be a shocker, right? Well their not. Not a single category has Engadget.

Let’s look at the only category I am passionate about, Best Computers or Technology Weblog. The Bloggies page describes these as Weblogs about computers and/or technology, other than Web design.

Any your Finalists are: Popgadget, Gizmodo, TechCrunch, Ubergizmo, and Lifehacker. These are all good choices, but where is Engadget? Slashdot didn’t make it around this time either. Last year Slashdot (winner), Lifehacker, Engadget, Gizmodo, and Popgadget were in the running. In 2005, Both Engadget and Gizmodo (winner). The year before, I don’t think Engadget was even online. (Gizmodo was and was in the running)

I am not saying Engadget is better than any other of the finalists, but I have a hard time believing that the #1 Blog (regardless of genre) on Technorati, didn’t garner enough nominations to be in the top 5 in this category. It could be entirely possible that Engadget didn’t ask it’s users to nominate them enough to get enough to make the top 5. I don’t remember seeing a call for nominations by Engadget this year. So that could very well be the problem.

This post might be an entire waste of time, but you have to admit, Engadget is one of the top 5 Computers or Technology Weblog online. Period. I found their not being here very odd.

Here are my predictions from the earlier post:

Best Web Application for Weblogs - Flickr, Digg, and Blogger.com
Best American Weblog - Boing Boing, Consumerist
Best Computers or Technology Weblog - Engadget, Gizmodo, and Mobility Site (ok, the token pimp my blog nomination)
Weblog of the Year - Consumerist, Engadget, Lifehacker

Update : I got a note in my email that a blog today had a similar post and noticed that “Engadget’s primary competitor has six nominations and Gawker in all has twelve. Weblogs Inc. has zero. ” So I decided to do a technorati search for “Engadget Bloggies” and found out that others have taken note of this.
