1st off, I work a lot. My wife takes care of all our bills and unless something is seriously different than what it was last week, she just pays and goes about being a mom.
I am not making any excuses for my not knowing some of this. Maybe if I were not so trusting, I would know some of it. Either way, it’s ridiculous.
That said, here is my problem with DirectTV.
Update: I sent a letter to the CEO of Direct TV and got a call from someone from his office. What I learned is at the bottom of the story…
Back in late 2005, I chose to give Direct TV a whirl against the advice of others. I had heard about the issues that are inherent to satellite. Well, I answered an ad that offered a TiVo receiver and 3 additional rooms and installation free. This went down fine. I was pleased with the service and didn?t really have any of the issues that friends told me about. I was aware that I was locking in to a 2 year contract. More than a year of happy service goes by and I bought a big HD TV so I decided to give Direct TV HD a try.
November 2006, I answered another ad in a circular that offered ?Free HD Receiver? with installation. I don?t remember if this was to ?bump? my contract to a new 2 year deal, but since have learned that it had. No biggie, I got a free receiver, so I accept that a contract is in order. Still, I am almost 100% happy at this point. We have started seeing some nasty signals sometimes with wind and definitely with rain. I keep trying to get around to finding out how to get someone out to readjust the dish since that is most likely what the problem is.
October 2007, I decide I want a DVR for HD. ( the receivers were out of stock when I got HD in 2006 or I would have ?PAID? for the receiver then) I went down to Circuit City and plopped down $299 of my own dollars to get an HD DVR. I take it home and install it. Called to activate it. Now my kids are happy to record hours and hours of crap, even better, I can record what I want to watch. J Everything seemed fine.
Last month, I received a box from Direct TV. I didn?t order anything so I called and asked what the heck this was. ?It?s an empty box to return the receiver?, I was told. HUH? The free receiver I got when I signed up for HD? ?Yes?. What the heck? How can I be asked to return something I was led to believe I OWNED. Anyhow, I am quite busy and didn?t get around to sending it back against my belief that it is my receiver.
Fast forward to last week. I mentioned that my wife only questions bills when they are different. Well, this one went from $100 to $337.80. That threw me off the deep end. I said, give it here and I will see what?s up. The cost was $240.00 for this HD Receiver I was supposed to own. That bothers me terribly, but that was only bomb #1. Bomb #2 was the fact that I had been charged $4.99/mo to lease this receiver that the ad told me was free. Hmmm? Fishy.
I call the 1-800 number, find out that I was misled and asked to have my service canceled. I was more than willing to a) pay a year of cancellation (11 months) and sell my HD DVR that I purchased for $299 at circuit city on ebay to recover the difference. I was going to mail the HD receiver I thought I owned back and go with Comcast or Charter. Well, a couple more bombs hit me even harder than the 1st two.
The 3rd bomb was that a new 2 year contract was slapped onto my account when ?I? purchased my own receiver. Re read that? when I PURCHASED MY OWN RECEVIER. WHAT THE HELL?
Oh, don?t laugh, it gets better. I figure, ok? I can take my receiver and pay the $275 early contract termination fee with whatever I can get on ebay for a 2 month old HD DVR. That?s when bomb #4 hits. Sir, you don?t own that receiver. Huh? The receiver I dropped $299 for at Circuit City. I don?t own it? Nope. I don?t. You paid for the right to lease the receiver to use on Direct TV. That?s kind of funny. I go buy myself a Nokia N95 (an unlocked GSM Cellphone) to use on Cingular/AT&T network, they don?t up my contract and tell me that they own my phone do they?
So, to sum it up. I owe $337 to Direct TV. I can reduce this by $240 for sending a $99 market value HD Receiver than I BELIEVE I own based on the ad I accepted to get HD service. No Problem. I guess I can send this thing back againt my will. (not that I am using it anyway) Then, I cancel my account and pay them $275. Instead of recovering some of the cost of this fee by selling the HD DVR I paid for outright, I will have to send that receiver to them too. Yes, send the receiver I paid $299 cash for to DIRECT TV. No refund for my $299, no nothing.
What a load of crap. Who governs this companies tariffed rates? The PSC, FCC, who? Think it?s the FCC?
Update: The guy that called me a few hours after my letter was sent to the CEO was very thorough in explaining how I was screwed. Here are the bullet points.
I am going to let them come out and fix my reception issues and give them another chance. I might as well since I would have to pay $275 to quit since I was screwed into another 2 year contract when I bought a $299 subsidized receiver. What crap. Anyhow, since it’s subsidized, I can’t even sell the damn thing to recover the $299.
Yes, I am happy for a great explanation, but I am still unhappy that companies can get away with screwing consumers over with contracts. The FCC needs to step in and throw some regulation on this. Subsidized or not, I am adding over $12 a month to their pocket by getting this DVR before they rope me in with an extra 11 months from when my contract was to expire.
Moral of the Story… READ THE FREAKING BOX (or paperwork) My advice, stay away from companies that take advantage of those that don’t read the FREAKING BOX.
I will not enter into any other contract with this company. I don’t care if they give me a 52″ LCD, no go! (not to mention, they would give it to me, then charge a lease fee and ask for it back if I don’t use it for 2 years.)
Thanks for explaining this Chris, but I have to agree to disagree on the business ethics of these moves. (my lack of reading or not)

2Wow! That’s unbelievable. I’d be tempted to get one of those local news channel’s “On Your Side” reporters to help expose this scam! DirectTV must have a couple of pages of really fine print in all their contracts!

3So where do you go from here? Comcast isn’t much better. I have direct only because of my wife who loves the east and west channels…
Good luck Chris!

5And just think if I understand it correctly AT&t is wanting to start selling cable as well. If so we will have 3 ways to get the shaft. Hey I guess rented tv goes well with the rented music people are paying $10 a month for.

6WOW… I was very close to getting Direct TV with the purchase of the new HD tv. I am VERY glad I didn’t (not that our local cable is great…but it is better than that)

7I can understand about the HD receiver (maybe) but I’ll be damned if I pay $299 for a piece of equipment and its not even mine. Somebody should have explained that when you purchased. I’m pissed at Circuit City too for you.

8I searched for “direct tv v. charter” and this blog came up. THANKS FOR THE HEADS UP!! I have Charter right now…. well actually, I JUST pay $150/month for the max package. I haven’t had service in 4-5 days, thanks to VERY poor customer service. I would like the hours and hours of life I lost standing in line in 2 different Charter offices and on hold with automated tech support. I spent an hour in a 100 degree office while some man complained about his bill (in collections!!) for $300 for an “unreturned cable box” that was returned!! He had the receipt showing it was returned and everything. He kept turning around to the mass crowd of sweating and angry customers in line saying “keep your receipt kids, please KEEP YOUR RECEIPT” I only have two cable options, charter and direct tv. I’m going to have to stick with charter…at least I don’t have CRAZY HUGE “fine print” charges. We need more choices.

9You paid sales tax on the receiver didn’t you? I believe that indicates a purchase, not a rental…
This company has no business ethics whatsoever, and it may be time for a class action lawsuit.
Don’t look for any help from the FCC or any other government agency..Those days are long past..

10Wow!! I currently have analog Direct TV with a Square Shooter HD antennae to receive over the air HD broadcast signals and was thinking of going to Direct HD TV for ESPN HD, Discovery HD, etc. What an eye opener!! I think I will stick with the antennae for now. It is FREE and works great with the major networks!!

11I’m in (sort of) the same boat.
I signed up for direct tv service mostly because they state nowhere on their website that they require a commitment of a certain length. Where it says the DVR is “FREE” there is no asterisk or foot-note or fine-print stating that a contract is required (nor in fact that you do not own the product).
I did not even know that I was “under a contract” until I tried to cancel my service a year later and the CSR informed me that for my convenience they would charge the cancellation fee to my credit card (which they had no authorization to do but that seems not to concern them either).
I am certain that their practices are not legal. Unfortunately, what’s a little consumer to do. They will just disregard your dispute and send you to collections anyways. That isn’t legal either but again as a consumer you have no recourse.

12A friend sent me the following link:
http://www.oag.state.tx.us/newspubs/releases/2005/121205directtv_avc.pdf
Apparently in 2005 Direct TV entered into a settlement with the Attorney General of Texas basically promising not to hide things like commitment terms in fine-print.
Of course, this is Texas, but it may or may not be helpful to people in other states too. For example it does reference to several state (non-Texas) consumer protection laws breached by Direct TV.

13Just happened to me. Difference is, when I got my DirectTV service through them a year and a half ago, the rep actually said that I had the option to buy or lease a receiver - so I leased the non HD one and bought the HD DVR for $299. Now, they want both back.
Of course, since this was a phone conversation, I have no record of it and now DTV wants to steal my receiver back.
I never had problems like this with DISH, and will switch back to them at some point.

14Also beware if you move and can’t receive a signal from Directv you are STILL required to fulfill your committment with them even though you can’t use their service!!! I found that out the HARD way!!!

15Same thing. I decided to cancel my Service with them after over 10 years and guess what.
I was told I have a two year agreement and would have to pay for the remaining portion!
In addition, I have to return the equipment. So what is the so called agreement for????
I never signed anything and they have my credit card held hostage. I cannot delete it from my account.
Any class action lawyers out there interested?
These guys are crooks. Stay clear as there are better options out there.

16I cancelled my Direct TV service (that I had bundled through Verizon) in December. I just got a bill from them for PPV movies that were purchased (according to them) in JUNE 2007. This is after I recieved a refund check for them after sending in my last payment. I called and said that it must be a mistake, thinking that they would just credit it. They argued with me for 20 minutes, and basically said that they were not crediting it, and if I didn’t pay they would send it to collections. Ha!

17Be careful about Dish Network too! We just cancelled with them due to the fact that for 3 years we paid a charge of $10 for HD tv, as the sales person told us we had to have this for a HD receiver. But, guess what? We never upgraded our basic package, never had any HD channels (except those from our antenna for local)!! When we asked about this, customer service said, “Why didn’t you say something?” I guess it’s the consumers fault for not understanding every last word spoken by fast talking sales reps. So, that’s $360 we won’t ever see again.

18Yup, Directv & AT&T wireless & a lot of cable TV companies are all doing similar things to their customers. It’s close to outright theft, it absolutely IS bullying & some of the most idiotic business practices I’ve ever seen. I wish the govt. would get involved in this “signing contracts & leasing equipment” garbage or that the people of the United States of America would just all up & stop paying for anything with a contract, don’t return anything & don’t pay any cancellation fees. Just ignore all these companies en masse.

19I’d like to add what corrupt, dishonest crooks Direct TV is. I signed up for a package “with locals” and when I turned on the TV and there were no locals, I called and questioned them and they said we couldn’t get locals in our area. I said, “why would I want to pay $55/mo and not get Fox, NBC, ABC, etc.?” and cancelled my service. Then they sent me a bill for $340 that they charged to my credit card on file so I can’t refuse to pay it. I paid $340 plus installation and $28 more dollars for a partial month of service, and I only had Direct TV for 18 days!!!

20Everyone who reads this. I am not sure how, but we need to start a class action lawsuit against Direct TV. I can’t believe that this is allowed in our Great Country. They went into my account and took $480 without ever telling me. This has to be illegal!! Everyone who deals with them should immediatley cancel any credit card they have on file with them. This company should be sued!!!!!

21We also are being held hostage by direct tv, Our reciever broke and wounldn’t pick up HD signal, that we pay extra for, and when they said we needed a new on and would send it to us they didn’t say anything about the contract being renewed. Now we pay $5.99 dollars a month for repair and since we paid the money our contract wasn’t renewed after only getting a letter from the corporate office.
They have no one to answer too.
FCC says that they are legal.

22I agree, from experience with everything you have said.
Direct TV should have a $1,000.000 fine imposed for everytime they mislead a member of the public!
Report this Corporate THUG!
They came out to my home after I paid by Credit Card for the bundle service associated with AT&T and when the installer arrived he told me he would not complete the installation. Why you may ask? Oh, because it was too much work for him! We live in a townhouse style and it would mean him running a cable outside the townhouse to the ground floor and then inside. Duh! SImple install. He told me to get Fire Dog or the Geek Squad at Best Buy to pay them for the cable install. THe install was supposed to be FREE with the install from Direct TV.
Then he would come back and connect things. What a loser!
Anyway, financially I was made to cancel the install by the contractor and the following needed to happen:
1. They would keep my money for 10 to 15 days and then reverse the transaction. What about the high interest rate paid on the Credit Card? Bad luck Dumby!!!
2. To get the service they cancelled my existing telephone / internet / TV service including all the credits I had built up over the years and the very low service costs with my other provider.
3. After the cancellation I was stuck with AT&T phone / internet, etc but I was paying $15 more per month. Get it? Prior to calling Direct TV I was paying $98 for the three (3) services - that was Saturday. Monday I was left to pay $113 per month with effectively the same service features I had before I asked for Direct TV. Nice huh?
I decided to get the $56 software for the internet which gets all the USA channels and 2,500 channels outside the USA - live TV.
I am happy with this since I route the signal through to other displays in the house. Can’t wait till they produce the HD version and then I will be set.
But no way - Direct TV - I think Consumer Protection in your various states should be sent the correspondence.
Report this corporate thug!
Hopefully we can get better business practices and ethics delivered from these people in the future.

23I also hate this company for most of the reasons listed in these postings. I challenged them on their $9.99 HD upgrade for existing customers…..that’s what it says on their web site (free for new customers, by the way). When you call, it is $9.99/mo……oh, and $99 for the receiver….oh, and the cost of installation for a new dish…..oh, and your 2-year contract renews. They left all that out on the web site.
So I’m unhappy and stuck with them. Can’t wait to get out. The one good piece of useful information I can share is that the $275 early termination fee goes down by 1/24 every month you have their service. I personally will wait til I get the cost under the cost of upgrading to HD DVR and getting out.
I hate hate hate hate hate this company.

24I am going to contacted the FCC and the BBB on this one. I will also make sure to provide sample complaints from these website which clearly shows that a majority of the consumers are not being informed by direct TV. I am an existing Direct TV customer (1 1/2yrs+). I put in a service order for Direct TV to finish a job for me putting in cable to two bedrooms. We had just bought a house and when they originally came it was wet and muddy due to the builder not laying sod yet. So I called to make arrangements to have the cable and boxes put in. The technician was good and convinced us to not get the basic box and upgrade to a HD DVR, so we did. We set up a new appointment for installation to get the new equipment. Not once did anyone advise that our service agreement would start over. I was not impressed before with Direct TV so if I was told this I would have never gotten the HD DVR. We called 03/26/08 to request date that we could cancel service and they advised it started over once we got the new box. I requested to see any signed forms where they explained to me that the service would change and he said they would have told us when we called and requested it. I did let him know that when I originally called it was just to have them finish a job in the house that they started. When I called back to set new appointment they did not explain that the service would start over. They said that I cannot have a copy of anything signed because they do not have it. I have to write to the legal office and I can get a copy from the technician. I went over the contract with the CSR and request for him to show me where it explains that if I get anything new that a new service contract begins. He showed me the paragraph that should have stated that and it does not. It just explains that you get a 18 mo. contract for a DVR and you get a 24 month contract with a HD DVR but no where it says your contract starts over every time you get a new box or any equipment. I thought that paragraph applies to the first installation. The worst thing is when they told me that I paid over $200 for a HD DVR that I do not own.
So, I am dropping the HD and Direct TV to the basic and sign up with the cable company again. At least there I may get screwed but not ******. I will wait to see if the FCC & the BBB can help first. My question is, if so many people are being scammed by Direct TV like we are why has no one done anything about it? My question to them is; I am in Texas I am a marketing manager and you have people you are selling these contracts to that cannot read well or do not speak the language well, how can you take advantage of people like that. If they were not trying to hide something then somewhere in their contract would clearly state that the contract begins over with any change in service. If I have to print every page and website of complaints I will and I hope someone takes us serious. They made it seem like I just did not read all the different contracts and I am the only one with this problem. I too was told if I speak to a manger they will tell me the same thing so it is no use. If anyone knows of a law suite against them please contact me. I think everyone should put in a little bit each month to pay for legal cost and sue them. With all the websites that have complaints about Direct TV, I think that it will be very cheap for everyone.

25That is almost my exact story and more. I did not give them a second chance because of my constant bad reception and on top of it all we missed the SUPERBOWL - no HD reception at all in two rooms! My husband freaked out!! We cancelled them now on top of the two receivers that I believed I purchased, I owe them an early cancellation fee for $299.00. i reported them to the BBB and tried to have them arbitrate it and they lied saying I never called them for bad reception, when in fact I called them over 5 times in a 4 month period. I would love to join a class action suit against them. If you know anyone, let me know.
Thanks,

26Had (Reads Have) Direct Shaft TV for 18 months, decided to install high speed internet from Comcast, signed up, Comcast came out and connected service at street level. I went into the attic to connect a drop to the room where I was installing the HS modem…well not so fast there buckaroo, seems the Shaft TV Installer had cut the comcast cable at the header where it came into the attic (COMPANY POLICY as I was told by some troll in Oklahoma) and removed all of the cable before leaving a nightmare of a mess of cables and junction boxes….lets see now some stranger comes into your house cuts all of your cable and hauls it all off…sounds like oh what am I looking for here, oh yeah VANDILISIM AND THEFT. I called The Shaft customer service????? after speaking to four or five different CSR’s in as many different states, to get someone back to the house to replace the cable…not going to happen…UNLESS I sign up for complete care for 20.00 bucks then the would be very happy to create a service call and come out whenever they damn well felt like it to replace the cable they cut and stole from MY house…I tried to cancel the service…..being the sharks that they are, they MUST have their pound of flesh….$299.00 cancelation fee please oh and your first born too if you dont mind, oh by the way we really hate to loose you as a customer as you have been such a stellar fellar…ya know paying your bills on time and all that crap…STAY AWAY FROM DIRECT SHAFT TV because you dont even get a reach around for being such a good customer. Probably too late to file a police report…or is it..I WILL FIND OUT.

27Can anyone say “CLASS ACTION SUIT”.
It is clearly EXTORTION when they extend our contracts 24 months without notice.
I had been with Direct for 3 years and had idea there were any pending contracts. I bought the HDDVR at Best Buy (No idea it was a lease).
IN THE MEANTIME….try this out!!
1. Make sure Direct TV has no valid credit card on file for your account.
2. Call and cancel your service.
3. Send the equipment back
4. When the bill comes….send them $1 a month from your bill pay account and let them chew on the paperwork..

28I also have a direct tv screw you story! A couple of months ago we decided to upgrade our service to HD. The tech came out and installed it and everything went well. He told us that there was a tree that we would probably have to cut down once the leaves came in if we had problems with our reception. The leaves came in and the HD went out. We cut the tree down with no improvement. We called direct tv and they sent another tech out who told us that without cutting another 6-7 trees down (oak trees) we would never be able to get HD reception. So I called direct tv and was told that since I let the tech hook it up in the first place that I could not get a refund, because it’s their policy not to refund any equipment after installation. It didn’t matter that I was basically lied to by the first tech. The lady on the phone even said that I should not have let the first tech hook it up if I thought there would be a problem with the reception. The solution they gave me was to send the receiver that I paid $214.00 back to them and they would send me a standard receiver which would also extend my contract by another year. I even offered to split the difference with them but no go. This is the same receiver that I could buy/lease for 99.00. So buyer/leaser beware! If you get service with direct tv and it doesn’t work you can forget getting any of your money back but you can still be expected to pay for the service that you can’t use. How can they continue to get away with this type of service. Oh and, by the way, they refused to give me the number of the cooperate office and was promised that a supervisor would call me back but never did! DO NOT USE DIRECT TV IF AT ALL POSSIBLE. They are crooks!

29I am beginning to think the first day you work for DirectTV the pound a 10p nail in the middle of your head! I canceled my DirectTV after being a 5 year customer and owning my own equipment (which I still have). Ten months later I got an advertisment from them and called to check it out. I was told nooooooooooo you can’t have that offer ’cause you have an account with us. The transfered me to a “winback” department, HA HA! Most miss named corporate department in America. The deal they offered me was not the same. I saiid i didn’t want to be “won” back treat like the guy who got the ad! I said thanks, but no thanks. That was a month ago. Now today I get a bill from them for additional receiver for five bucks, dated the day I called. I asked to speak to a supervisor and was denied! She was too busy. I don’t care if the choice is DirectTV or rabbit ears….I’ll take the rabbit ears!

30Same thing has happened to me, my box went bad and i went to best buy and replaced it at a cost of $200.00. I had to move where direct TV won’t work and called to cancel the service and was told that i would have to pay an early cancellation fee. I thought wait i been with direct TV for more than 7 years. CSR told me ok just send the box back meanwhile i get charged on my credit card $250.00 that i did not authorize. And this was on a credit card that expired over a year ago. They dug up my old card and adjusted expiration dates to get the charge to go thru. Unbelievable as you get the feeling your dealing with a local ma and pop store down the street with the sign NO REFUNDS OR EXCHANGES on the wall. I would avoid Direct TV at all costs as their employees must be instructed from top corporate to give the customers a big screwing. Calling does no good as when you call about this problem you are put into a phone que of eternal hold. My only advise is to make sure you cancel all your credit cards on file with direct TV and if you do get a charge call promptly to start a chargeback to them.

31Direct TV definitely gets the award for The Absolute Worst Customer Service Ever. I have been with them for around 10 years and had no real problems until recently. My mother became disabled over a year ago. She was still able to take care of her financial obligations until recent months when I started having to help pay her bills. One of those bills was for her Direct TV service. I used my bank debit card to pay her bill online several times. Things finally got to the point of my not being able to keep everything going for her. She let her service with them go. Low and behold after a couple of months, they charged MY DEBIT CARD FOR HER BILL!! I immediately called them and was told there was nothing they could do blah, blah cuz the card was used to “open the account”. I explained that it most certainly was not. Finally, after waiting on hold forever, they told me that it WAS their fault and that they would refund the money they charged me as well as any bank overdraft fees that my account might incur as a result of this unexpected charge. They told me to fax a copy of my bank statement with the charge which I did the very next day. I then called them back to let them know that it been faxed. They proceeded to tell me on this call that they could do NOTHING to rectify the situation!! I then waited on hold for *22* mintues to get a supervisor. The call finally disconnected without anyone ever having picked up. I called back, more than a little angry. I still tried to keep my cool as I was transferred to a supervisor. Well, as calm as I was, she was NOT. She talked to me like I was GARBAGE! As I tried to explain the situation she kept cutting me off and talking over me. I told her that I was really aggravated because I had been told one thing the day before and now they were telling me something else. She kept telling me to call my mother since it was her account that was paid with my card. I told the lady that I HAD spoken to my mother and that I had her bill right in front of me. She then kept telling me that she couldn’t discuss my mother’s account with me! I finally lost my cool. I told her that the only other call I would be making would be to an attorney. Boy oh boy did she get mad then! She told me that if I was threatening legal counsel then she was done talking to me and she hung up. I called back and told the girl who answered that I wnated a supervisor and wanted one right then. Bless her heart, she was sooo nice and she told me point blank that I would get NOWHERE with a supervisor if I hadn’t gotten anywhere already. She proceeded to look over my account details. I told her to just cancel my service with them completely. She eventually talked me into giving them a chance to try and fix the problem. She told me again that they would get my erroneous charge reversed, but that they couldn’t do anything about the overdraft fees at my bank due to the charge. So, she offered me a $10 a month discount on my bill and the movie cahnnels free for 3 months. I told her to do that and I would think things over. I am just going to wait and see what they end up doing. But, as bad as I hate to leave them, I am pretty sure that I will be doing just that no matter waht. I cannot stay with such a rude, dishonest ocmpany like this. Even though I don’t like Dish network, I will probably be back with them within a few months. I just wonder…does anyone think that there is class action lawsuit potential here?? Direct is doing this kind of theing to a LOT of poeple it seems. (One more lil note…whatcha wanna bet that they end up trying to charge me for those “free” movie channels after 3 months, unless I “call and cancel them”?!)

32Direct Tv company’s practices taking credit cards or bank card information and makes unauthorized charges without your permission or knowledge
Direct tv has begun a practice that allows them to go into your checking account or charge your credit card for outstanding balances, cancellation fees, equipment or even ppv orders, unauthorized charges. This is without your consent or permission. EVEN without a bill.
I receive my bank statement stating that there was a 300 dollar charge from direct tv. I had called to inquire about transferring my service due to moving, I was told I couldnt get a transfer order until i paid the bill of 80 dollars that was going to be sent to within the next couple of days for the month service. I inform rep that i would make payment once bill was recieved like i had done for the past 12 months of service with direct tv. The rep stated that without paying the current months bill i would not be able to transfer service. She said that all i could do was cancel and reorder later once i got moved when i told her that the new owners had moved into my home. The call got disconnected and I was out of town figuring I would call back later to follow up.
3 days later my checking account has the charges taking out of my account. I call direct tv, i was inform the bill was for early cancellation fees and the 80 dollars for the month of service. I inform that i was under a 12 month contract and year was up so why was i being charged early cancellation. it was at that moment the rep stated that since i had the dvr, the contract was changed to a 2 year, i informed her no one had ever told me this and the email i recieved stated a year contract from direct tv.Also that I had previously spoken with a rep who also stated it was a year contract. I reviewed their email after the conversation, I guess i failed to make the assumption that advance equipment is a dvr, its not written out clear and why should I as the customer have to read between the lines? Why arent both of their policies verbally stated at the time of ordering and installation. It wasnt and their are hundreds of complaints on the internet stating the same practice of decieving the customers with 2 year contracts renewals and the unauthorized use of debiting banking and checking accounts.
the rep also inform me that it is now direct tv practice that all customers must have credit or bank cards on file so that they can deduct charges. I ask how was this possible without having a consumer permission. this was when she inform me that all consumers agree to this when signing up for service, it is in the customer agreement that comes with the first month bill and by that time its too late to cancel service without being penalize with cancellation fees. that they will use any cards showing in their systems in which the customer has made payments with in the past, she verified that i had 2 credit cards stored in their system in which they save when payments are made, also this is without having consumer permission.
so despite not having permission or even a bill, direct tv will debit your credit or bank card. BEWARE! this angers me, my account wasnt in collections, i have never been behind on their bills and pay consistently, nor was their any outstanding balance. i hadnt even gotten a bill yet, the fact they are able to go into banking account without my knowledge or permission is unethical to me.Direct tv was sued by md and several other states a couple of years ago and won due to deceptive billing practices. But still this is allowed to continue!
******I am including the web link of their agreements so that you can see what they use but isnt verbally stated about their practices of debiting customers bank accounts. http://www.directv.com/legal.
also a copy of their email that confirms service, no where states a dvr becomes a 2 year agreement:
